In Canada we celebrate Thanksgiving in October. This time last year, this exact day, Ellie was coming home for the first time. I remember the NICU as an anxiety ridden place on that day. Everyone wants their baby home on Thanksgiving. We had cancelled all plans and were surprised to hear that Ellie would be sleeping in her own home the night before Thanksgiving. Last year we had no turkey or stuffing, having our baby home was Thanksgiving enough. So this year, as I am focussing on moving forward, it was hard not to remember how thankful I was at this exact moment last year. This year I am thankful for: being with family on a beautiful fall day, turkey and cranberry sauce, Mya sitting at the kids table with her cousins, Ellie and Mya laughing on the same wooden floors I played on when I was little, too much whipped cream, little fingers on piano keys, health and happiness, and holding my family close, I’m so thankful for holding this family close. Happy Canadian Thanksgiving!
